In light of our current economic climate, plans for a new house were halted in favor of an addition to the client’s existing house also by Faulkner Architects.
Our client requested a detached guest house to be provided to complement the existing 3000 square foot house. Limited space on the site resulted in an attached form accessed by an existing covered porch. The solution provides a private, separate guest house that is accessed easily and under cover, a great attribute in Lake Tahoe, where yearly snow totals can reach 200 inches.
The form of the addition had to be carefully inserted in front of the main living areas. To maintain the existing views, the living space was located below the main level of the existing home. The roof of the form serves as a new deck and provides an elevated green roof planted with succulents. A small transparent entry, stair, and loft connect the guest space to the existing porch and house.
Details and materials from the original design are transformed in a modern, clean manner. Mahogany windows and doors meet plaster walls with steel reveals. Window sills are half inch steel plate. Exterior window sills and head flashings are copper plate. Copper reveals complete the trim details. Wood sheathing is reclaimed redwood.
