James McIver House
A three-building assemblage carefully inhabits a highly-figured site covered with undulating rock outcroppings – the guest house reaches up into the Jeffrey Pines and provides orientation to the south sun and the main house.
Our clients commissioned a ski house with guest quarters on a very quirky site. A pair of rocky knobs generate the land form of this Sierra landscape. The spaces between the knobs and the trees are inhabited by structures.
Sustainability considered - Stone for project was gathered from the structure’s footprint on this rocky site. Reclaimed redwood timber framework and exposed steel stand against Sierra Nevada winters.
Utilizing a clean modern approach to detailing, edges are “revealed” with steel channel joints. The interior face of the exterior walls are systematically deployed with reclaimed redwood, while luminous, near-white plaster graces all other interior walls. Flooring is a combination of reclaimed walnut and bluestone, and all railings are formed of simple forged steel.
