Sonoma Hills

Wine Country, California

Located in Northern California's Wine Country, an eroded hill of exposed basalt stone boulders covered with a stand of black and white oak set the character for the site. Hot summers and mild, rainy winters drive the climate. Parallel to the contours, three one-story rectangular sheds are woven into the hillside in a settlement-like pattern with sloped roofs that follow the hillside. Offset laterally, the forms make territory for exterior living, sheltered from prevailing winds by their arrangement.

Materials mirror those found on site. Basalt and oak floors pair with acoustically detailed white oak interior surfaces. The last wildfire burned 78,000 acres here. To build resilience to fire, the exterior is sheathed in weathering quarter-inch plate steel.
